Christopher Lee Schaefbauer

My name is Chris Schaefbauer and I am a graduate student in Computer Science. I've been at CU-Boulder for 6 years as both an undergraduate and as a graduate student. I have served as Co-Chair of the CUSG Student Health Advisory Board for the past 2 years and the Director of Health and Safety for CUSG for the past year. These roles have ignited my passion to be a voice for students and fight for positive change on campus.

CUSG is so important because we have long-ranging, lasting impacts on campus. We can make college more affordable and campus more inclusive. We can make campus safer for our students. For me, it’s concerning to talk with students that cannot go to the rec center or library at night because they are scared to walk across campus. We need to enhance the lighting in our community and invest in services for students to get around at night. I envision building a community where CU students watch out for each other and are empowered to act to keep each other safe.

When I listen to students talking about feeling alone and isolated on our campus, I am driven to action. We need to empower student groups and cost centers to unite with students to provide community and support. We should make sure that students are getting services that are essential for their academic success and development, regardless of gender, race, age, and identity.

For all these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs!
**

My name is Ellie Roberts and I am a sophomore in the School of Arts and Sciences studying communication, while also being a teacher’s candidate for the School of Education. I am a candidate for the Tri-Executive position on the UNITE ticket for student government.

I am a Colorado native, and I never plan on leaving this beautiful state. I graduated from Chatfield Senior High School in 2011. I love CU. I have loved it since I was a little girl. I completely fell in love with this school on my very first day of freshman year. I knew I wanted to be a student leader and to be a voice for the student body.

I am currently the Chair of Student Group Funding Board and I have seen firsthand how valuable student groups are to our campus. They are the life of our University and the place where students find community. Student groups do not deserve to have their funding and resources cut. Instead, they should be given opportunities to continue to enrich our campus community.

I want to unite with student groups to give them the funding and growth opportunities they need. I want to unite the CU student body and end the toxic rhetoric that separates the communities on this campus. I want to unite the voice of the students and empower our voices to make a difference.

For all of these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs!
**

My name is Marco Dorado and I’m a junior in the Leeds School of Business studying finance. I’m a candidate for the tri-executive position of student government with UNITE. Originally, I’m from Thornton, Colorado and graduated from Thornton High School in 2010.

I spent my freshman year of college in New Mexico, but later transferred to CU Boulder in the spring of 2012. After transferring, I realized just how important it is that all communities on our campus unite together based on their similarities and love for being Buffs, rather than allow themselves to be divided by their differences. As a student that comes from a low-income family, I also understand the importance of maintaining access to a CU Boulder degree open to all students, regardless of their background. I strongly believe that student leaders on this campus have such a powerful voice that, together, we can work with our campus administration to ensure attending CU Boulder does not become a financial burden many students cannot overcome.

I have a little sister who is 11 that has high hopes of being a buff herself someday; it’s the responsibility of student leaders today to ensure that every current and future student have access to CU Boulder and, furthermore, access to a campus that is all inclusive and is full of proud, united Buffs. For these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs!

The University of Colorado has always been my dream school and being involved in student government is a great way to improve the school of my dreams. I ran in the fall with INSPIRE and am currently the secretary for Arts and Sciences Student Government. Volunteering is a huge passion of mine along with singing and playing guitar. Fellow Buffs!

My name is David Bretl and I am running to be your Representative-at-Large on CUSG.  I am currently a first-year graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.  I grew up in Seattle, Washington, and attended the University of Washington as an undergraduate.  My experience at UW was fantastic, but I am proud to be a Buff and help foster a world-class education.

I love to stay physically active and involved in the community.  As an avid soccer player, I referee both indoor and outdoor soccer of all ages, and I coach weekly youth soccer camps.  I also serve as a graduate advisor for one of our fraternities.

What inspires me about this ticket is our commitment to creating an unparalleled college experience.  Coming from another campus, I can tell you that our university offers a vibrant energy with the potential to grow our tight-knit community in all facets of college life.  To do so, however, we need the right leaders.  I know that I am the right choice for Representative-at-Large because I offer the right combination of experience and perspective.  At UW, I served as Interfraternity Council President, where I worked closely with student government.  As a graduate student originally from a different university, I can tap into the concerns of the graduate community, while also offering innovative ideas for our board.

The INSPIRE ticket has been built to create an affordable, safe, and united college experience for YOU.  Vote INSPIRE!

My name is Eric Mercadante and I am a junior studying Environmental Sciences and Sociology.  My current interests are related to environmental policy and sustainable development.  The position I am running for with CUSG is as a Representative at Large. I am from Upstate New York and have always dreamed of coming to CU Boulder. Things I like to do in my spare time include snowboarding, hanging out with friends, meeting new people, and traveling.

The role I intend to take as a part of CUSG is fixed around bolstering CU Boulder as a community and an academic rich environment.  The University of Colorado is a top public university, and should remain the top of its class, for current and future students. I believe that all students at the University should be given a voice through CUSG.  This can be accomplished by listening to students and advocating for what they want. I also believe in keeping the cost of attendance affordable for incoming students. This will help promote diversity and will facilitate equal access to higher education, allowing for more creative and innovative ideas at our school.

By reinforcing CU’s academic legacy, promoting a socially-just school, being more directly involved with the Boulder community, and engaging students with more choices for clubs and extracurriculars, we will make the University a more inclusive and cohesive whole.  As a result, we will come together as fellow students and that’s why I want to UNITE The Buffs!

My name is Joe Putnik and I am a running as a member of the INSPIRE Ticket for the position of CUSG Representative-at-Large. I am originally from Golden, Colorado and am a Junior in the Business School studying Finance.  My extracurricular involvement ranges membership in several Entrepreneurial clubs at Leeds to hosting a weekly show at Radio 1190 to my time spent at St. Thomas Aquinas to the means in which I attend the university: the Evans Scholarship. This diverse exposure to the student body, coupled with over 7 years of work experience, has supplemented an acute understanding in better addressing student needs and facilitating growth within the colleges.

Like most students, my time at CU has provided its trials as well as its blessings. A view I have adopted that catalyzed my time here, is that it's not necessarily about where we've been in life, but more about where we are going. The linchpin of the INSPIRE Ticket is to both recognize and value the wellbeing of each student on campus and to provide the tools and environment necessary to succeed. As Representative-at-Large, I intend to leverage my modest background with a desire to integrate altruism and efficiency in every project I undertake in order to revitalize the welfare of the university and the student body.

As a member of the Student Group Funding Board (SGFB), I have had the privilage of meeting with representatives from countless student groups on campus. This opportunity has given me unique insight into the diverse range of interests at CU and is the reason I decided to run this semester. Student groups add inestimable value to all of our degrees and I will do anything in my power to support them. I am an advocate of student groups, but I am also an ardent environmentalist. Sustainability is a principle that I live by. Throughout my college career I have been involved with several environmental programs such as Anything BUT Drive at CU, and as a sustainable transportation intern with CoPIRG. We have the solutions to environmental problems; it is only a matter of implementing them. I strive for a campus that is environmentally responsible and I hope to maintain CU's reputation as a leader in sustainability. I am from Littleton, Colorado and I attended Mullen High School before going to CU.  I have had 2 years of experience on CUSG this far, as I was on Freshman Council last year, and this year I served as the Director of Homecoming, and now I am the Special Events Coordinator on Executive Staff. Aside from this, I am the Director of Greek Relations on Panhellenic Executive Council, and I intern in the CU football office. As these facts might allude, I love CU and I have so much passion for this University. I come from a family of Buffs as both my brother and sister attended CU before me, and I am more than familiar with every aspect of this superior CU Boulder community.

One of my largest passions is community and unity as one student body. Ever since I can remember I have valued the importance of community. I grew up in the Columbine community and I guess you could say that this is the reason why I appreciate unity and coming together for one purpose: the betterment of each person in order to enhance the whole.  The CU community is such a strong one, and I want to make sure that it stays that way.

My name is Juedon Kebede and I am a sophomore majoring in Communication and studying Pre-Law. I am a candidate for a Representative at Large position on CU Student Government. I am originally from Memphis, Tennessee.

When contemplating on where to spend my next four years as a senior in high school, no university gave me the “ahh” feeling like the University of Colorado did. Since I was an out of state student, I came to CU knowing almost no one. It saddened me that many of the friends I did make my first year had to leave CU due to high tuition expenses. Making sure that everyone has access to this University, regardless of your financial situation, is key not only for the academia of oneself but also building that sense of community and learning those irreplaceable social skills you could never learn anywhere else. As a Representative at Large, I want to ensure that there will be no tuition without representation, and work to get a student regent on the CU Board of Regents who will advocate for an end to extreme tuition increases.

Understanding that unity brings power is another crucial concept that our CU leaders need to focus on. Strengthening inclusivity amongst the community, not just the CU community, but the Boulder community as well will bring more cohesion, resources and indisputable interpersonal knowledge. In order for our future to stay bright and get the best college experience, I want to UNITE the BUFFS!

I am running for representative-at-large for the CUSG legislative council. I completed my undergraduate degree at CU as well, and the end of this year will mark my sixth year enrolled at CU, and it will have been ten years since I first joined the Buff community. I believe in CU as a flagship not just for the state, but also for the region. In order to keep innovating and building, we must keep student services strong, we must actively encourage diversity and acceptance, and we must advocate for increased access and lower tuition in every way possible. I do not believe in a student government that is limited to cost-center management and internal affairs. I believe we are the strongest forum students have to debate the issues that matter to them, and we are the only organization that represents every single student at the University. The best outcome for all students will be my only guide. We need the help of each of you to keep pushing CU forward, and constantly innovate our academic practices and the student experience. If you all don’t lead the charge, no one will, and I’d love to facilitate that process. For all these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs.

Hey, y’all!

My name is Alex Mitoma, and I’m running for a Representative-at-Large position in the CU Student Government. I’m a junior pursuing a dual degree in Environmental Engineering and Creative Writing and President of the six-time National Champion CU Swimming & Diving team. As one of the few independent candidates, my agenda is plain: to revitalize funding for the CU Club Sports program.
I’ve been a member of the Club Sports program for three years now. It’s been the most fulfilling part of college for me, and I know the other 1,200+ CU Club Sports athletes feel the same way. However, as President and as a longtime member of the CU Club Sports Executive Board, I’ve watched our allocated funding diminish every year, diverted from the student-athletes who work so hard representing our school. As a freshman, the chance to swim here changed my life.  As Representative-at-Large, I want to ensure that future generations of Buffs get to have that same opportunity that I did.

Sure, I definitely stand for more, too. Outside the pool, I’m also an employee of the Environmental Center, serving as Volunteer Coordinator of the Ralphie’s Green Stampede program—the country’s first and largest zero-waste initiative of its kind—at CU Pac-12 events. I’m also head coach of a Denver youth swim team, an avid ultimate frisbee player, and have worked with Boulder elementary schools in sustainability courses.

I believe strongly in the importance of student wellness and sustainability—for me, these go very much hand-in-hand—and as Rep-at-Large I’d really like to emphasize these things.

Thanks so much, and vote INDEPENDENT!

Being a part of the non-partisan organization New Era Colorado for the past two years has taught me that students have more of a voice then they believe they do. As an out-of-state student from a very small town, I found this incredibly difficult. Though I did find a niche of my own, I know other students that did not. I know from my personal experience that once a person finds something they’re truly passionate about; it will affect their life in a tremendous way. I want to make sure that current and incoming students have easier access and a better experience finding ways to get involved on and off campus. By creating this transparency, I hope that students are more prone to getting involved and making their college experience the best it can be.

Thus far, my experience at CU Boulder has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I am running for office at CU because I want to help implement an accessible and more collaborative form of governance. It is my belief that when the government and the electorate are UNITEd and working together, the most equitable decisions are the outcome.

Since I started school here, I have met so many students with great ideas for improvement that don’t know where to share them. Before becoming engaged with student government as a candidate, like many other students, I didn’t know how I could share my opinions with the decision makers on campus. I really want to help create a student government system that ensures a greater diversity of input when formulating legislation and decisions that will affect the student body. There is a wealth of insight stemming from the immensely diverse student experiences on campus, but as a student government, we are currently missing out on that knowledge. I want every student – not just those who are politically savvy or who have friends in student government – to be able and encouraged to co-create the decisions that affect them. Rachel Michelle Leonard

Hi! My name is Rachel Leonard and I’m a candidate for the position of Arts and Sciences Representative. I am currently a freshman in the School of Arts and Sciences, studying Biology and Integrative Physiology. On campus, I serve as part of the leadership board for one of the Jewish student organizations on campus, Hillel. I am also a proud member of Gamma Phi Beta. Being part of both of these unique communities has helped me to see just how incredible and diverse the people at CU Boulder are, as well as how underrepresented many student groups are on campus. This underrepresentation has sparked my drive to run for student government. As a leader for this incredible university, I will strive for engagement between the student government and student groups. Our campus is made up of people of every creed, race, religion, sexuality, and gender identity; it’s our role to ensure that our student government represents this diversity. This is also why I am so excited to be part of the UNITE ticket. I believe that our campus should strive for engagement, equality, diversity, community, and affordability. For these reasons, I want to UNITE the Buffs!

My name is Bethlehem Feleke and I am from Aurora, Colorado. I’m a sophomore in the School of Arts & Sciences majoring in International Affairs and Political Science, and I want to be one of your 2013-2014 Arts & Sciences Student Government representatives.
I feel extremely lucky to inhabit such a beautiful, eclectic campus. Undeniably, we are all linked by our love for this campus, our gratitude to be able to attend this university, and our fierce buff spirit. As a student involved in many communities, all with similar underlying values, I know how difficult it can be to bring those communities together in the context of such a large university. For that reason, I want to work to create a platform that unites all students and Boulder community members.
A growing pressing concern for myself, and I’m sure for my peers as well, is the increasing cost of tuition. One of the most valuable things about a CU education is that it remains accessible to all students. Through solidarity, leadership, and unity I know CU students have the power to influence administration in determining financial costs to make it affordable for everyone.
When I leave CU I want to be able to leave a legacy that strengthens the bonds of students, ensures an accessible CU education, and has a life-long lasting affect on who we grow into. Because I believe all these things are achievable with a strong student body, I want to UNITE the Buffs!

I am running as an Arts & Science representative on the Inspire ticket mainly because I love attending CU Boulder and I could not have asked for a better University to involve myself with. Since I was in 6th grade, student government and associated student body groups have always been a huge part of my life. I feel the most satisfied and fulfilled when I am serving my student body and making sure that their experience is nothing short of amazing. On campus, I am involved with the Chancellor’s Leadership RAP, Kappa Kappa Gamma as Philanthropy Chair, Club Soccer, and the Annex. I am so excited to have the opportunity to run for representative because I truly have every intention of ensuring that every student in the Art & Sciences college will be fully represented and heard. Running on the Inspire ticket gives me the opportunity to guarantee transparency, lower student fees, and ensure representation to every Buff.

Daniel Cahill Hansen

My name is Daniel Hansen and I grew up in Sacramento, California. In 2009, I moved to Boulder and immediately fell in love with CU and knew this is where I belong. I am now a senior in Civil Engineering in the BS/MS program so I can continue on to earn my masters degree while I am here at CU. I have been involved with many organizations on campus; from the Engineering Leadership Program, to serving as a Vice President on the Interfraternity Council, I believe in making the most out of every minute of college and supporting others to do the same.

I am running for President on UCEC. I have leadership experience being a senator on UCEC in order to represent the engineering school, as well as serving on Finance Board. With this knowledge, my diligent work ethic, and belief that all students should be represented fairly and equally, I am the perfect candidate for the job.  My goal is to reach out to the diverse engineering community in order to bring opportunities to others and provide students with the necessary resources to succeed both academically and socially. I believe that since our students put time, money, and effort into their educations, their fees should be watched over and safeguarded; only to be spent efficiently and productively. I am passionate about serving you, my CU family, so we can all become the best we can possibly be. Go Buffs!

Hello I am Elliott Toth and I am from Fort Smith, Arkansas. I am a sophomore in Aerospace engineering. When I came to CU I really wanted to get involved in the student government and have been loving it ever since. Right now I am a representative on the Engineering Council and have enjoyed working with student groups and societies to make this one of the best schools on campus.

Now I am running for Vice President of Engineering Council. I understand how much effort and leadership is required to fulfill such a position. I have been working on revamping the Engineering Days that the College of Engineering hosts every year. This has given me the insight on planning, communication within the Engineering School, and executing goals for the school. Not only has this given me experience but it has also gotten me excited for the upcoming year. Next insuring that the student fees are spent wisely and equally for all the students is very important to me. My drive, experience, and dedication coming together to make this school better make me the best candidate. Finally, making sure this school is ran to its full potential is what makes me so passionate about serving the school.

Why I want to run: I have always been interested in student government because I like the idea that I am that person who can be the voice for a student body. I think it is empowering to listen to people and their concerns and work towards making these concerns heard and possibly changed. Being the connection between students and admin is something I want to do because I’m not afraid to voice the demands of the majority because I believe that they are what make this school and therefor are who should be driving change.  And not only is being this connection important but being able to be the person to unite students together is amazing. My passion for this position lies in my goal to help make the voices of my fellow engineering students heard beyond the doors of the Engineering Center.

I’m running with the INSPIRE ticket, because I believe in a government that holds itself accountable by being transparent to those whom it represents.  I believe more can be done for the Engineering College to make our degrees more competitive in the eyes of future employers.  To do this, I will have an obligation to use the influence of CUSG, as the most powerful student government in the county, to invest our resources and time in changing the reputation of our university to better reflect the hard work and devotion that students of the Engineering College put into their time at CU.

My name is Jon Fearer and I am running for the position of UCEC co-senator.  I’m a sophomore chemical engineering major here at CU, but I’m originally from Mesa, Arizona.  This past year I’ve been serving on UCEC as a representative. I’ve gained great experience from this opportunity, through both working with different student organizations and making decisions with my Engineering Council colleagues.  Outside of CU I’ve been fortunate enough to work at a Phoenix-based renewable energy company, which has taught me the importance of using the knowledge of people around me in order to solve problems.  This internship also gave me a great appreciation for sustainability, something that I love seeing in action on campus.

I would be a fantastic UCEC co-senator because I have experience in CUSG and I’ve enjoyed helping other student groups reach their full potential.  As someone who is (and would be, if elected) in a position to help delegate funding to these groups, I want nothing more than to witness even higher achievements from them.  After spending the past year studying their proposals, I can say that many engineering projects from CU’s student groups are absolutely incredible.  If I return to Engineering Council next fall, I will make sure that we do all we can to foster the success of these organizations, and hopefully better our already-great school’s reputation.

My name is Kent Cohen and I am running for CUSG as a representative on the engineering council.  I have lived in Colorado for nearly my entire life and absolutely love it here.  I am a junior majoring in civil engineering.  Last year I also served as a representative on the engineering council and hope to continue that experience. Aside from CUSG I hold a leadership position in the national civil engineering honors society and am a part of AGC. To me, the INSPIRE values are all in the name.  I believe CU student government is here to help everyone at CU succeed and inspire greatness is all buffs alike.

On that note, perhaps the most meaningful aspect of our beliefs comes from inspiring representation.  I truly believe that every student that is a part of this incredible community has a right to know what their student government is doing for them.  Before I held my role on the council I barely knew student government existed, much less what it could do. With INSPIRE, every student will feel like they are being represented and hold a voice.  Everyone has a right to be heard and above all, the student government must remain a body that is by the students and for the students.  INSPIRE will make that happen and I could not be more excited to be a part of it.  Go Buffs!

My name is Shawn Sweeney and I am a freshman studying Architectural Engineering. I am very excited to be running for an Engineering Council Representative-at-Large position. I am originally from Littleton, Colorado and graduated from Dakota Ridge High School in 2012.

After coming to CU I realized how many amazing communities there were on campus and how easy it was for students to get involved. Even though I was impressed with the surplus of diverse and interesting student groups there were, I did notice fragmentation within the extracurricular activities on campus. I think that student groups on campus lack the cohesiveness and external support that enables them to achieve their full potential. I think that CUSG has the ability to provide student groups with programs that help them connect with each other and extend support.

I am currently involved with CUSG Freshman Council and CU’s National Honor Fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi. As an Engineering Council Representative I would hope to help and support engineering organizations to connect with other student groups across campus and assist engineering students in finding communities both within engineering capacities and across campus. I also wish to help engineering students with future employment opportunities by creating a strong professional network within the school for students to have access to, in hopes of finding internship and career opportunities. Finally, I want to work towards making the engineering school more cost effective and affordable. For all these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs!

My name is Ryan Abraham and I am a junior in the College of Engineering studying Environmental Engineering. I am running for the Engineering Representative position of CU’s Student Government. My hometown is Littleton, Colorado and I graduated from Dakota Ridge High School in 2010.

One of my biggest concerns as a student is the ability of a student or group of students being allowed to voice their opinion. As a freshman, I noticed that it was difficult to ensure that student government, let alone the administration noticed our issues and opinions. This seemed problematic to me, because it seemed to me that the student government and administration only wanted to solve issues that pertained to their interests, not the student body as a whole. Now that I can be in a position where that can change, I intend to help make a difference in the CUSG, and help each student's voice be heard.

Through hard work, my parents immigrated to America in hopes of finding a better life. Their diligence was passed on to me, which helped me become a first generation college student. This is something that I cherish because I am the first person in my family lineage to be granted the opportunity of receiving higher education. This is a privilege that I, as well as other students must not take for granted, and it is our responsibility to make sure that this opportunity is not spoiled. For these reasons and more, I want to UNITE the Buffs!

Hi all, my name is Leonardo Hermosillo and I am junior majoring in Engineering Physics with minors in Applied Math and History. In this spring election, I am running for the position of UCEC representative.

I know of student government here on campus. I know of their power and of their potential. Furthermore, I know that it should be comprised of a group of students who want to represent their peers, their ideas, and their passions entirely. I am passionate about student government because I love the idea that the school should use its resources to encourage any community to get on campus and to grow and develop. Student groups are things that allow for student retention and success, because a school without student groups doesn’t allow for much more socialization on campus other than clever anecdotes about homework and how much the weekend is sought after.

Being in the College of Engineering, I see many of my peers participate in many student groups inside and outside of their fields of study. I see the importance of such things, and wish to encourage the university to continue to fund such honorable endeavors without compromising for an increase in student tuition. Above all, I want to UNITE the buffs.
